Pakistan’s underwhelming performance in the ongoing Asia Cup 2023 has sparked speculation about team changes ahead of the ICC World Cup 2023 next month. The team was eliminated from the Asia Cup early after losses to India and Sri Lanka in the Super 4 matches.

Skipper Babar Azam, Director Mickey Arthur, Chief Selector Inzamam-ul-Haq, and head coach Grant Bradburn are discussing the ongoing fitness concerns that some important players are experiencing. The selectors are actively investigating alternative players for the World Cup roster, and some senior players are set to lose their positions.

According to sources, a preliminary World Cup squad was chosen in cooperation with management, and players were told of their participation informally. However, the recent Asia Cup performance has caused this choice to be reconsidered.
Inzamam is especially concerned about the team’s defeat and the injuries to key players like Haris Rauf and Naseem Shah. Due to a shoulder injury acquired at the Asia Cup, Naseem’s availability for the World Cup is doubtful.

In addition, vice-captain Shadab Khan and batter Fakhar Zaman have been out of form. Babar blamed the bowlers for the Asia Cup failure, expressing unhappiness with their performance.

The team’s stress appears to have been exacerbated by PCB Chairman Zaka Ashraf’s visit to boost player morale. Misbah-ul-Haq, Head of Integration and Technical Committee, and Inzamam aim to meet with local selectors to make required modifications, while also incorporating Babar, Arthur, and Bradburn in decision-making.

It’s worth noting that the ICC World Cup 2023 will feature 10 countries competing across 10 venues from October 5 to November 19, with the opening and final matches taking place at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. The event would be played in a round-robin format, with 45 league matches, with the top four teams qualifying for the semifinals, which will be conducted in Mumbai and Kolkata, with reserve days for the semifinals and final.
